Fashion Show!!

Despite the chaos that goes into the making of the fashion show and the behind the scenes, all I know is I want to do that again. Being able to display all of the work my team and I put into our collection was an amazing feeling. Definitely beats just posting on Instagram or Twitter what I created because instead of just a still, people could see the way everything moved in person. Loved the energy and I even kind of thrived off the nervousness filling the room, it only pumped me up more.

Our collection looked great on the runway and here's a pic of us all together.

After modeling the collections, the ones who created an avant garde piece, which includes myself, had to go change really quickly backstage to get right back out there in time. For my avant garde, I knew that I wanted to do a piece that required little to no sewing because I wanted to be able to do the entire thing without having to get up lol. So I created the look by cutting out different widths and lengths of t-shirt, and then weaving them together. No sewing required. I put around 20 hours into the garment and finished it so last minute that I hadn't even tried it on until I had to change into it for the actual fashion show. It fit like a glove and I really love it.

On Friday, we had a photoshoot, even though I don't currently have any of the professional photos from the photographer, I still had Camille and she took some bomb photos of me in my collection piece. All I knew is I wanted the photos to be back lit and yaaassss love.

What are my goals?

Honestly, I have no idea. I'm so confused about what I want my future to be that I can't make any goals.

I guess my goal is to figure things out so I can make a goal.

My Favorite Fashion Era

If you would've asked me what my favorite era for fashion was about 6 months ago, I definitely would've said the 90's, but recently my answer has changed. Now I would say my favorite era for fashion was the 70's. I'm too in love with the mom jean look to choose any other decade. The thin wide frame glasses, striped sweaters, the beginning of graphic tees. Just graphic tees, like band tees. Classic rock greatly influenced the fashion industry and fueled rebellious clothing in general. Greater fashion risks were taken and more and more celebrities were beginning to use fashion as a statement, whether it be social or political. Big contributors were gems like Prince and David Bowie. Their music and their fashion will always be what shaped the 70's and all decades previous and proceeding.

Mood Boards

What are mood boards you ask? Well they are boards that portray a mood.

Pretty much it, that's what they are. But what do they do? Mood boards set the mood for a collection you are creating. Like the vibe you're going for. The aesthetic. The feeling you want your audience to feel. And depending on the images, swatches, etc, you put on it will make the viewer understand what the collection is going to be about. What it's going to look like, etc.

For example, there are two groups in my fashion design class, with very different aesthetics, and here are images of what their mood boards sort of looked like

                       Group 1                                                      Group  2
Related imageImage result for mood board tumblr

Complete opposites right? But because they are completely different, you the audience knows that they're collections are going to look nothing alike as well.

The mood boards help the designers to stick with their ideas, to remind them of the vibe they initially created, and allowing that to inspire the collection.

Paris Fashion Week FW 2017

The Paris Fashion Week FW 2017 show I viewed was Balenciaga. Not a new designer to me because the name was always so fun to say, so I never would forget it. Here is the link to all of the fashion week shows, and Balenciaga caught my eye because the thumbnail showcased this garment
(pictured below).

Image result for balenciaga fw 17 womenSo of course I had to watch it.

After viewing the show, I definitely go the vibe of a professional and powerful woman, but she still likes experimenting with fashion.
A lot of playing with silhouettes was evident, and towards the end, the looks can best be described as "poofy". The image to the left is an example of that.
Neutral tones for coats, with mostly faded pigments and pastels, but they were paired with bold colors and prints in the skirts and shoes. When there was a beige coat, there was a neon yellow knee high boot sort of thing. The skirts with the long shirt overlapping it then a heavy coat and knee length boots/socks kind of reminds me of Scottish kilts. Especially because sometimes the skirts were plaid. I also noticed that the tops were usually structured, but the skirts had a lot of movement on the catwalk. Turtle necks were everything in this line. Knit turtle necks, oversize turtle necks, coats with a turtle neck. Turtle necks with pencil skirts, flowy skirts, etc. Just turtle necks.

The feel was very masculine and androgynous in the clothing but then a belt was used to define the shape of the body, acting like a corset. Most of the outfits were paired with a purse, and all of them were either small hand purses, some plain and some unique, or the had very over-sized tote bags

Grammy's Fashion

I think we all can agree that miss chuck e cheese wore the most surprising look, but another dress also got my attention, surprised doesn't describe it correctly, more like a confused blend of hell yeah and why though?? If that makes sense??? This is the look I'm talking about:

It's just I don't really understand the statement, like I get that it's ironic but then again, to protest I wouldn't wear his slogan, but rather a white trash bag with cheetos glued on it, then a yellow feather clip to wear in my comb-over hair ya know??

Chrissy Teigen slayed me so hard, that's all I have to say about that.

I didn't really have a worst look picked out because all of the ones that are considered the "worst" were all funny and out there so I applauded them on that. So instead I'm going to mention my runner up which is Jane Zhang. Her gown is beautiful but I feel like it's too similar to what Lily Collins wore to the Golden Globes. I mean they're completely different in color and the designs aren't the exact same thing, but the whole illusion neckline with the texture continuing onto the skirt, they are the same. Still a beautiful gown though.

McCall's Renovation

Read this article about the McCall Pattern company and home sewing. Pay close attention to some of the changes the company has gone undergone toward the end of the article. For your readers, summarize what you learned, then add an opinion piece about how "fast fashion" has affected this important part of the fashion industry.

I read this article, "Do-It-Yourself Fashion Thrives at the McCall Pattern Company" in The New York Times, and I'm pleased to see that McCall's is trying to revamp their company to be more directed towards a younger customer. They hired their first Social Media Manager to branch out and become known to the millenials. As well as bringing some nostalgia to older social media users by posting pictures of patterns from the 1970's, and from what I saw, I kinda want to order one of these patterns so I can make the garment for my next project. Been really feelin the whole 1970's to 1990's fashion vibes. I range day to day on what era to be inspired by.

i really want to make the middle zig-zag collared dress

SAG Awards

Just gotta say that the entire Orange is the New Black cast who attended looked amazing and awesome. But, I just think that Dascha Polanco looked just especially awesome. I've been really feelin the whole pant suit vibe for award shows or events in general. Plus the all black and the 1920's hair style!!! love.

I think everyone who went to the awards went there to make a statement, if it be through fashion, or through their speeches. Shoutout to David Harbour for his incredible speech and to Winona Rider and her supply of reaction meme faces.

My favorite look has got to be Taraji P. Henson's gown. IT'S MAGNIFICENT. SHE'S MAGNIFICENT.

Definitely going to be checking out Reem Acra's collection after this.

Toilet Paper Wedding Dress???

Toilet paper dresses like whaaatttttt??!?!?!? Kinda wish I had actually made it out of real fabric cuz then I could wear it but unfortunately, pins are the only things holding this thing together so... Anyways, the project. Before anything started we were put into teams of three and had to come up with a concept in 2D form. I already had a bunch of ideas for the design so I pitched them and my team was like "okay so g8" and I put together a sketch and here it is

I watch Say Yes to the Dress like everyday on TLC so I was throwing out all of these terms like (read these like an old pompous British man cuz that's who I picture saying this) "illusion neckline with a subtle sweetheart", "on the bodice we should continue to texture of the flowers". But when it came to the skirt of the dress I wanted to do a train, but I also wanted to keep it modern with a short dress, but not a high-low dress cuz no. So that's when my brain just kept screaming "HIP CAPE!?" And so the hip cape was formed. I don't know if there is a formal name for it but I'm still going to call it a hip cape.

But yeah we worked really well together when making the dress. We kind of assigned "jobs" of which part of the dress each of us would work on, so my partners, Abrina and Thao, worked on the front of the bodice and I worked on the back. The critique went well with a lot of positive feedback, and someone wondered what it would look like if the skirt was long all the way around, but we were like "BUT THE HIP CAPE!?!?!?" so we didn't change that. Then (s/o to Keeane) Keeane suggested that we should continue the flowers onto the skirt to make it more cohesive. G8 suggestion Keeane because our dress upgraded big time.We all agreed on continuing the flowers onto the short part of the skirt and a little bit on the back. After we finished the final touches, it was !!!!! love it so much! 10/10 would recommend

Here's a pic of the final sketch

How thrifting has kept my wallet thick

So guys, about a year ago, my friend Camille introduced me to thrifting(quick s/o to you girl) and ever since then, I no longer feel guilty after going on a shopping spree. Now, instead of spending over $200 for maybe a pair of jeans and two shirts, I can go into Savers with crinkled twenty dollar bill, and leave with a practically new jacket, maybe two pairs of jeans, and a cute shirt or two. And almost everytime, a main brand product like Levis, True Religion, Calvin Klein, etc, that when bought from their store is around $150, I'm getting for less than $7.
This brings me to my point. Today I'm wearing one of many thrifted jackets, and this one I thrifted a few weeks ago from Savers, and its a light wash denim jacket with sherpa lining, trucker style, and it was maybe $6 and it happened to be Levis. So of course I was like hell yes and now I wear it maybe everyday. I came into to fashion design today, and my friend were all "omg theresa ur jacket is so cute where did u get it??" and stuff, and when I said Savers and that I got it for less than $7, they were like waaaaatttt. But this got my wondering, how much did this actually cost because I have this jacket and three pairs of Levi jeans at home and also a pair of Calvin Klein jeans that I all thrifted. I looked them up only and compared it to how much I paid for them and ohmygod guys, I AM SHOOK
I GOT THIS FOR $6?????
Then I looked up the original prices for all of the jeans I've thrifted and ??!?!?!?!
THESE WERE $7
$5!!!!
$3!!!!!!!
THESE WERE $4??!?!?
I did some math and if I had bought all of these items at their full price, my total would've been $386!!??!?! BUT I THRIFTED THESE FOR A TOTAL OF $25!!!! I GOT THESE AT ABOUT 6.5% OF THEIR ORIGINAL PRICE. F*** IT UP SAVERS WIT DAT 93% OFF SALE!!!

Golden Globes Fashion

I never watch award shows because I'm not gonna lie, they're just really boring. However, I will look up what everyone wore to the award show and the gowns and suits worn at the Golden Globe Awards were awfehchwafc amazing. Everyone's colors were so springy and flowery it was really exciting. Out of all the seasons, especially for fashion, my favorite is definitely fall time because of all jewel tones usually involved in fall color stories. All of the velvets, suedes, and faux furs, I love, but for some reason, seeing all of these cheery spring time colors were just making me really happy and making me think I need to add some more favorite colors to my list. The favorite colors for last night were definitely blush/pink tones, yellows, and lilacs. These colors also usually being paired with a floral pattern, if it be an applique or the dress being shaped in a way to resemble a flower. If they weren't in those, they were in either classic black or white, maybe both of them together. Men were in mostly classic black and white tuxes, which is always pleasing to see. So here is a little insert of Eddie looking amazing as always.

I was really feelin all of these blush tones with floral appliques, so when I saw Lily Collins and her dress!!! I also actually just made a wedding dress out of toilet paper(yes toilet paper) and made it have an illusion neckline, and her dress had that too, so it was easily my favorite gown of the evening.

Recently, I started rewatching Game of Thrones on HBOgo for maybe the 10th time and I'm already at the 9th episode in season 6 when I started rewatching last week which just shows where my priorities are and how much of a life I have. When I saw Sophie Turner and Gwendoline Christie, yaass they looked amazing especially when I go from seeing them threatening to kill people all the time to them looking like they just float on clouds wherever they go.

I HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN MY BROTHER TO CARE

!

i have made a breakthrough to my brother and it is the best thing because i have been trying to get him to appreciate this for the longest time and i finally got him to because i made him try it.

here's some background on my brother:

  • hates everything drawing/coloring related
  • likes videogames
  • hates when i give him nicknames that catch onto his friends
  • likes bacon
  • hates long pants
My brother for the longest time has been the typical teen boy who will wear the same outfit everyday of the week, never style his hair even though we got him hair gel like 2 years ago, has had the same pair of target brand shoes since 2008, wears these basketball shorts that are now too short because he's worn them sine the sixth grade, and refuses to go with me to get clothes. But everything changed when I went out to buy him a Christmas present, and like every year, I buy him clothes because this is the one time of the year where he has to accept them and say thank you. I was at cotton on with my mom and the original plan for my mom was to go in there, buy maybe two shirts and leave, but I was determined... I was going to get my brother to wear and like a pair of joggers. I found a pair of copper toned, drop crotch, elastic ankle joggers and bought them. Even if he didn't like them, I was going to make him wear them anyway so.

Christmas morning came and he knew what was coming when he got to the present from me so he opened it all "ugh again", then he made a disgusted look on his face when he pulled out the joggers, but i was like you are going to like them and you are going to wear them. I forced him into his room to try them on and of course the whole time he was complaining and being all like "Theresa why did you buy me pants I hate pants so much I'm gonna kill, but only after you return them and get the money back, because then I'll get $30 bucks too." or whatever. Then his complaining stopped and i was like what do you think???? He kept doing that "I'm mad at you because I want to smile but I can't because then it will show that you were right" face. But apparently he liked them because he wore them for three days straight.

Another good thing happened where he actually made plans with me to go shopping, because my mom won't give me money to buy clothes because I buy too much, but now I get to vicariously shop through my brother which is !!!!!

New Years Resolutions

First of all i just gotta say that I beat the **** out of my face today with my new too faced sweet peach palette and even put false lashes on and considering how lazy i am i just gotta say that i'm proud of myself even though i was late to school because of it haaaaaa

So it's 2017, thank the universe, and I have made about the same resolutions as I did last year like "I'm gonna get in shape!" or "I'm gonna get a job and make money!" or "I'm gonna stop procrastinating and actually try in school!" etc. Which of course ended up epically failing and didn't accomplish anything and like I said last year.. "This is going to be my year!" which is just another lie to myself because probably by around January 20th or something I'm gonna be like "resolutions who???"

but if u want it here is a list of what I want to accomplish

  • make lots of money
  • passing grades
  • graduating highschool
  • acceptance to college
  • hot bod
  • become yoga master
  • eat healthy food
  • cut out bad energy
  • cut out bad people
  • move out
I have no idea how i will accomplish these but i will kind of try!!

Where do you think designers find their inspiration? What inspires you?

Designers find inspiration in everything. The world is so pretty and trees are like woah cooool and flowers are like omg great. but sometimes designers don't get inspired by the beauty of the world but instead the ugly parts and their collections look like a sad person would wear them but then again i would wear it because yeah life. I usually get inspired by messy art or sort of street styles. Graffiti is really cool and I really want to mix the too worlds of fashion like a classic silhouette then splashing something controversial on it like graffiti. When I see graffiti I see art but other people like my parents see it a nuisance or vandalism that's ruining a wall or whatever. I really want to bring that concept into fashion because I would be "ruining" this classic dress into something that's seen as a crime. Idk I've just had this idea for like a year now and with fashion design i can finally try to make it and bring my vision to life so yeah. So pretty much I'm inspired by annoying people.

In My Wildest Dreams

There is so much I want to do and explore but I feel like I don't have enough lifetimes to do everything I dream about. Because different parts of me want to do different things and depending on what is inspiring me at that moment will change what my dream would be. The professional and academic side of me wants to go to college and eventually go into the medical field as a doctor or EMT. This is also the dream I have had since middle school. My middle school self always wanted to be a doctor and to help people and who thought school was everything and that everything art related was only a hobby and not that important. This was the dream I would tell everyone, my family, friends, school counselors/administrators, applications, etc. But recently(recently as in as of freshman year of high school), art and music became a major part of my life and I started believing that maybe I could make a career out of art. I've always been interested in art and I've tried so many different types of art, like the fine arts(painting, drawing, etc), cinema makeup(like monster movie makeup), and now fashion design. So now my branches of options expanded even more of what I could do with my life from medicine to sports all the way to designing clothes. When people are told they could pretty much do whatever they wanted, usually people are excited because they have the option of literally doing anything. Okay, I don't want to sound conceited or anything(even though saying that makes me sound it anyway so moving on) but I'm good at everything. I'm not even kidding, I am good at everything. Not great like "OMG I'M THE BEST IN THE WORLD" only...good. Nothing stands out which makes it really tough to decide what to do with my life. I want to know what I should do which sounds bad because you should decide your own life. But lately I just want someone to straight up tell me that I should do _______. If I could do everything that I've ever wanted or thought about doing, this is how I would want my life to go. First, I would go to college and play college hockey, then I would get my degree and become a paramedic. Do that for a few years and eventually get asked if I wanted to go to Africa and help the villages there. I would spend a few years there helping people to get the care they needed all while learning French(French is very common in Africa next to Swahili). Then, I would drop everything and move to L.A. where I would go and become apprenticed at a tattoo shop. After I became an established tattoo artist after a good decade or so and gained a bit of a following, I would branch out and start a clothing line. I would release my first collection and after it lands and trends, I would move my tattoo shop to France and since I learned French while in Africa, it would be all good. This would gain my more of a following with my tattooing and my clothing that I would start to be asked to do commercials promoting products or whatever and TV shows and movies would use my clothes for their shows costumes. Then I would move to New York(because I love NY) and get a nice apartment in the city while flying frequently to L.A. for the commercials and movies. Later, at an interview, I would throw out that I was a huge fan of The Walking Dead and that I actually used to do cinema makeup for fun. Robert Kirkman(author of The Walking Dead comics) would then approach me later saying he was making a spin off The Walking Dead and that he would love for me to appear as a zombie in it and that I could be trained by the makeup crew and could design my own zombie look and how I would die and who would kill me(first choice would be Daryl but this is a spin off so he probably wouldn't be there). After appearing on the spin off, I would get a holographic email/telepathic message(this is the future) from Bill Corso(makeup artist for Star Wars) saying that he saw my design for my zombie look and would love for me to work with him as a concept designer for an up and coming Star Wars movie. We create a bunch of aliens and creatures to appear in the background and one of the companions of the main character. Since I fulfilled my dreams of being a part of the best TV show/movies ever and making a lot of bank as well. I could use the money to travel the world
